HER STORY SCOTLAND

Supporting girls and women to be the change makers in their own story...

Her Story Scotland aims to support girls and women to be the change makers in their own story; increasing knowledge, skills and confidence through targeted issue-based group and individual work. Also, through the development of health and wellbeing training and education to further promote co-benefits of increased inclusive opportunities to support girls and women in their communities and personal aspirations.

In our communities self esteem, confidence and resilience are at an all time low, particularly among girls and women.

Through targeted issue-based group work sessions Her Story Scotland aims to increase knowledge and confidence, build resilience and increase aspirations for the girls and women that we work with increasing positive participation in their communities and increasing positive life choices.

HER STORY SCOTLAND

Through discussions surrounding equality/inequality, healthy relationships and consent...

we hope to educate and empower girls and women in our community to recognise unhealthy warning signs early, whether that be in a relationship, the community, school or workplace, and to feel secure and supported to make decisions that are healthy, safe and right for them.

For the past two and a half years, previously under the umbrella of another organisation, the team at Her Story Scotland CIC have been supporting girls and women in the Angus area. However, collectively the team have been supporting girls and women in the community for the past 15 years.

Our position on menstrual education:

A lack of menstrual education and the opportunity for open conversations around menstrual health teamed with a lack of access to affordable, reusable and disposable menstrual products has led to a generation of girls and women who do not and cannot fully participate in the community around them.

This lack of knowledge and access impacts on their whole life health including having a negative impact on their physical and mental health and often stops them from seeking support. A lack of whole life menstrual support in Angus had led women to feel that they are simply surviving their way through menopause rather than being able to thrive at this time in their lives with one woman advising us that when she approached her GP for support she was advised to look online to see what was on offer. At Her Story Scotland CIC we believe getting in early and having conversations at a young age with these girls and young women will lead to better overall physical, mental and menstrual health throughout their life both through a greater understanding of their own bodies in relation to their menstrual cycle and also an increased confidence in being able to talk about it and any issues they may be having. This in turn will benefit health services as through these open conversations and increased knowledge girls and women will access health services at an earlier stage when they feel something is not right with their menstrual cycle and be able to discuss what they are experiencing.

TESTIMONIAL

Krysta and the team at Her Story provide a safe, supportive space for girls to explore issues that matter to them. Girls like working with Her Story and develop confidence and strategies to navigate the challenges they face as teenagers.
